STYLE STORY: Thrown Together

Lately I've been very slack with updating my calendar, i.e iPhone, with scheduled appointments and events.  That was indeed the case this Saturday.  I started the weekend with my usual Shopping with Elle post, and thought I had the remainder of the day to myself . . . . NOT SO MUCH!  It wasn't until I began receiving Facebook event reminders that it dawned on me that I had two events to attend - a sip & shop, and an artist exhibit.  With less than two hours to spare I juggled cooking dinner, pulling a look together, and hair & makeup to create this look I'm simply referring to as THROWN TOGETHER.

Creme double lapel blazer with lace sleeves, dress, and accessories from Elle VJ + leopard Bertinni pumps.

The weather was so nice this weekend so I thought I'd get a jump start on showcasing some spring fever.  You'd never know we had a snow storm just a week ago!

I really love how the green, gold, and leopard compliment each other in this look.

STYLE STORY: Cotton Candy

It's a beautiful Sunday here in Charlotte, NC today.  The temperature is around 66 degrees, so it's not too cold, but definitely not hot either.  Considering this gorgeous weather I decided to dress up a bit for church and go with something long and flowy.  The key piece to this look is the pink & blue sequins encrusted custom maxi skirt . . . . it is absolutely AMAZING, if I do so say myself (in my Jay-Z voice, lol).

Phone always in hand . . . signs of an addicted editor-in-chief and blogger.  Maybe I'll change my iPhone case for the next style post, lol.  I've had my eye on this chic Michael Kors iPhone case so it may make a debut soon (totally off on a tangent there, lol).

Layering effect to counter the occasional draft - practical and stylish!  Charcoal cape with sequins accents + blue long sleeve v-neck sweater from NY and Co.

Bracelets from my new accessories line called ACCOUTREMENTS - debuts soon online at ellevj.com!

What's a great look without a great shoe?  I absolutely adore these blue shimmer heels with open inside I purchased from Off Broadway Shoes (very similar to the Badgley Mischka Dixi Glitter Pump . . . view HERE).

A Scarf Will Do

On Thursday evening, I attended the Raw Artists Showcase at the Tremont Hall to cover the event for my street style blog, Charlotte Street Style and couldn't find anything to wear!  (I know I say that a lot, but it's so true, lol)  After debating outfit options in my mind, I finally decided to just dress down and wear a blazer, tank, and trouser.  To add a little pop, or just something different, I pulled out this beautiful scarf gifted to me by my fashion friends at Belk's.  It was the perfect compliment to a dressed down look and even worked great with my Farrah Fawcett hair, lol.  It's a beautiful navy & pink color combo by designers Crown & Ivy available in stores and via Belk.com.  Luckily I ran into another fashion friend and stand out photographer, Joshua Galloway who was so kind to snap this pic for me!  Be sure to check out his site HERE.

Here are the deets on my look:

Pink Tank - Victoria's Secret
Navy & Pink Scarf - Belk (gifted)
Larry Levin Navy Trousers - Kohl's

Shopping with Elle (Cynthia Rowley Casual + Chic)

On a random stroll through Belk's, I was intrigued by the chic display for renowned designer, Cynthia Rowley.  I must admit, that until today, I've only admired her designs online or on others, but wasn't sure if there was anything for me and my personal style.  Boy was I wrong.  The new spring collection that's currently in stores is feminine, flirty, and actually quite southern if I do say so.  Varying floral prints, and bright blues and greens make for one fascinating collection full of splendor and delight.

Let's head to the dressing room for a little fun and lots of style.  I pulled 3 looks comprised of printed shorts and top, a classic fitted pant, a dainty blouse with a mint collar, and a blue cardigan.

Another great thing about this line is that it's true to size.  I'm a solid 10 and her pieces fit me great (with the exception of the shorts, I had to size up because I'm hippie - aka, baby got back! lol).

Remember these key points when shopping:  Always, always, always wear comfortable and loose fitting clothing.  You'll be changing multiple times and the easier it is to get out of your clothing (and put it back on) the more apt you'll be to enjoy the experience and try on more.  Secondly, my rule of thumb is to wear a pair of heels so that you can see the potential of the look when trying options.  Lastly, and as a former boutique owner, the store's will LOVE you for this, wear little to no makeup (I wear only a light gloss or lip balm when shopping).  Let's not stain or dirty the garments before we get them home, or even for the person after you should it not make the final cut.

Shopping with Elle (Floral Delight)

Last Sunday while in Target I spotted this floral blazer while sifting through the new Peter Pilotto collection.  I was immediately drawn to the floral pattern and the contrast of the black sleeves and zipper details.  Of course these pieces are not from the Peter Pilotto collection, they're not even designer, but they're so stylish and the floral patterns exude a romantic feel.  From Target's Xhilaration collection, although they may not have been intended to be worn together as coordinating pieces, I decided to pair them for a combination that's full of floral delight!

It's just dinner

In what I would consider one of her best looks yet, First Lady Michelle Obama dazzled this week at the White House State Dinner in this BEAUTIFUL Carolina Herrera gown, rumored to be in the price range of $12,000, after all it's just dinner (NO - it's an event!).  The gown featured a black, hand-sewn beaded embroidery applique scallop-edged top that came to Obama's elbows. The top went over a "liberty blue" silk faille corset and long skirt with a train that billowed behind the first lady as she walked with President Barack Obama. It was matched with a black velvet belt.

I may be a little impartial but let me publicly state that in my opinion, Michelle Obama is the first lady of ALL first ladies.  She's prim and poised, well spoken and feminine, she is . . . . . ELLE OF THE BALL.

These BOOTS were made for SNOW . . .

It's snowing . . . . . seriously, and not the 1-2 inches that we normally get here in Charlotte, NC, but it is SNOWING.  So I had this all black chic ensemble picked out for my style post on today UNTIL I stepped foot outside and realized this was the real deal.  I quickly backed away from that plan, because as chic as the ensemble is, I am not going to ruin my good garments, lol.  I then remembered these super stylish COACH boots I purchased on a whim quite some time ago (I know, I know, I'm always saying that, but it's so true, lol) and rarely ever wear so . . . . . . ta daa!  BAM (inserts karate kick)!

The reports are stating 8+ inches of snow and these beauties are the perfect boots to trek around in right now.  Not only are they COACH, but they're stylish, comfy, and oh so warm (did I mention colorful).  I paired them with a black tweed blazer by Ellen Tracy, navy and pink scarf gifted to me from my fashion friends at Belk, fitted hot pink Victoria's Secret tank, and a fitted jean.  Who says you can't be chic in the snow.

* please forgive the brows, I'm letting them grow back in thick before arching again *

Stay tuned and stay safe . . . . hopefully once it stops coming down, I can get back out there with the original look I planned.

WISHLIST WEDNESDAY: Henri Bendel

You guys bear with me as I'm still reprogramming myself to think less like a boutique owner, and more like a true style blogger.  With that being said, for so long I've limited myself to only wearing and/or promoting items that I've sold (at least publicly anyway).  I now have a broad spectrum of style to showcase and fully plan to do so via my Shopping with Elle posts on Saturday's and now my new Wishlist Wednesday posts!

With Valentine's Day fastly approaching (no, I do NOT have a Valentine) I thought I'd share with you one of my wishlist items from the fabulous brand of Henri Bendel that would be great to receive as Valentine's Day gift.

STYLE STORY: Buzz City

This Saturday, I had the pleasure of covering the Hoops and Heels event hosted by the staff of the Charlotte Bobcats (soon to be the Charlotte Hornets again, hence the outfit).  I love how the event infused women in heels with the idea of increasing our knowledge of the game.  Approximately 150 women alike, some in heels and some not (sad face - lol) enjoyed a cocktail hour/wine tasting followed by an inspiring presentation by Stephanie Ready on the fundamentals of the game.  It was such an empowering moment to hear of all the women that have made an impact in the arena of men's and women's basketball.  We even had the opportunity to watch the players warm ups court side, followed by the game viewing in a luxury suite.  It was a great social gathering and I'm certain that the ladies in attendance had a swell time.

Now, on to the fashion and style . . . . I snagged this AMAZING teal leather suit (with shoulder pads - YES)  in a little vintage shop while traveling and all I could scream was YES, YES, YES!  The color is out of this world and a rare find.  Because I wanted to play on the original and returning color scheme of the Charlotte Hornets I decided to accent the look with purple by locating this purple lace top at my local TJ Maxx and these Bakers shoes that I've had forever but have only worn once.

Shopping with Elle (Escada + Kate Spade)

Me being the shopping fiend that I am, once I get started I just can't stop!  I decided to venture into the world of luxury and check out the selection at Off Saks 5th Ave.  Immediately upon entering I bypassed the clearance racks and headed straight for some of my favorite designers, Celine, Chanel, St John, and Escada.  I didn't notice anything that stood out initally but I happened to stumble across this magnificent tweed and sequins Escada blazer and from there things took shape!

Escada Bikita Blazer - $1,390 Off Saks 5th Ave price (reg $3,475)

Just a rack or two over, I found a beautiful blouse and trousers that I knew would compliment the blazer without overshadowing it.

Escada Nessi Blouse - $290 Off Saks 5th Ave price

Escada Tzipora Trouser - $170 Off Saks 5th Ave price (reg $255)

With a sly grin on my face (because I know this look is going to be stellar) I head towards the fitting room and just before entering, I notice a rack of clearance shoes (whoo hoo!) . . . . . Kate Spade at that!  I stopped dead in my tracks and located my size - they're a vibrant blue and nude with an accent bow.

Kate Spade Melinda Too Bow Wedge - $167.99 Off Saks 5th Ave price

Because of the muted colors in the garments, the shoes really bring the look to life.  I absolutely love and adore this look.  It's perfect for a stylish day at the office or a business meeting with potential clients.  And to top it all off, my fashion friends at Off Saks 5th Ave gifted me with a discount card (in addition to the 25% off sale they're having).  BINGO

Please keep in mind that this is the original fit of the garments as sold from the store.  I always recommend having your garments tailored to fit your body proportions.  As an example of this, notice how the pants fit me a little large in the above photos.  I have to buy 1 size up in most trousers because I'm hippie (in other words, baby got back) - that means, they fit in the hip but are too large in the waist.  I then have the waist taken in and the pant legs shortened as I'm only 5'4.  The final result will be a perfectly tailored look!

Shopping with Elle (Peter Pilotto + Target)

While everyone is at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, I've been plotting on this new Peter Pilotto collection for Target.  I almost forgot about it considering my series of events this weekend with Elle of the Ball and covering the Hoops and Heels event (blog post on Monday) at the Time Warner Arena, but thank God for iPhone reminders!  I jumped up this morning with only 25 minutes to spare before Target opened its doors to shoppers and upon arrival to my surprise, the store was virtually empty.  I'm most certain that the chaos of #NYFW has attributed to this, but also, I didn't see a hard push from Target on this collaboration like they did with the Philip Lim collection.  Lucky for me, I had plenty of time to browse the collection (or should I say the few looks that were in store) and pull a few pieces for my weekly Shopping with Elle column.

I'll preface by saying that as a professional shopper (yes, I shop that much) you must arrive with a game plan and even pre-plan when necessary.  Always, always, always wear comfortable and loose fitting clothing.

With that said let's get into the looks!

Look 1:  Peter Pilotto® for Target® Belted Dress in Red Floral/Check Print - $44.99 - purchase HERE

This dress is the least of my favorites but I included it anyway.  While it's cute and dainty, it just doesn't pack the POW and WOW that I tend to gravitate towards.  My favorite detail of this dress is the belt!  The belt ROCKS - its a black and white combo with snaps in the back that gives a perfect fit.  I'd buy the dress just for the belt, lol.

Look 2:  Peter Pilotto® for Target® Dress -Green Floral Print - $39.99 - purchase HERE  /  Peter Pilotto® for Target® Cardigan -Blue/White Colorblock - $34.99 - purchase HERE

The dress alone is cute, but when I tried it on, I felt that it needed something additional.  I decided to pair the dress with this preppy cardigan, also from the collection and instantly I was sold.  Alone the dress just looks like a sea of print, but when paired with the solids in the cardigan you can appreciate the print a little more.

Look 3:  Peter Pilotto® for Target® Sweatshirt -Light Blue Floral/Stripe Print - $29.99 - purchase HERE  /  Peter Pilotto® for Target® Pencil Skirt -Light Blue Floral/Check Print - $34.99 - purchase HERE

This was my favorite look overall for today.  Although it's kinda casual (for me, that is) I really love how comfy, yet stylish this look appears.  The sweatshirt is perfect for a cool day and the pencil skirt is adorable.  I can even see myself pairing it with a solid black crop top in the warmer months.  There's a short sleeved crop top from the collection that could also be paired, but my preference would be to go with a solid top so that the detail of the skirt can shine through.

Stay tuned for where I'll be shopping next week and if there's a store in mind where you'd like to see me create some looks feel free to comment or email directly at info@ellevj.com.
